WIKING has miniaturised the airport history of the Federal Republic of Germany: Immediately after the war, Esso arose to the status of a leading fuel supplier who, on top of that, enjoyed protection by the Allies in the young Federal Republic. Accordingly, the company was granted access to the country’s airport from the onset, commissioned to ensure the supply with aviation fuel first for military and later for civilian aviation operations. Countless road trains made by a variety of manufacturers operated under the fire red colours of the Esso corporation in the fifties – all of them flaunting the international brand of Esso Aviation Products. These included the road train that was headed by the Pullman tractor unit made by Mercedes-Benz, a cab-over-engine tractor unit that was a novelty in many places at the time. The Pullman chassis were later to be used for fuelling at many airports across Europe.
