In 1965, the 1600 TL embodied Volkswagen’s elegant attempt to give the stuffy Type 3 a trendier appeal. Its contemporaries quickly came to deride the "Touring Limousine" as “sad solution”. The slick and streamlined hatchback body of the TL simply could not conceal its rear-wheel drive Beetle nature. While the 1600 TL boasted the excellent craftsmanship you would expect from a Volkswagen, it was miles away from handling like a sports car.

Door handles and ornamental strips on the sides imprinted silver. Silver “VW 1600 TL” lettering on the rear with tail lights painted red.
