Our theme of the era of steam locomotives in the USA is completed by the "˜American Water Tower'. This traditional design was built throughout the first half of the 20th century along railway lines in the United States to quickly supply locomotives with water. A round wooden water tank with a flat sloping roof and numerous flat steel rings rests on a filigree steel frame with a central maintenance tower. Depending on the water pressure, these rings are arranged closer together from top to bottom. The level in the tank could be read using a level gauge.

These towers were erected to the side of the railway line so that the locomotives could be refueled with water via a lowerable filling pipe.
