In the nineties, it was regarded as the very definition of a space magician, but it could do so much more. Back then, anyone looking for a station wagon with plenty of space made the right choice in opting for a Volvo 850. When it was launched in 1993 as an estate car, the vehicle introduced the world to a space miracle from Sweden and quickly became popular with a very special clientèle – its distinct design as a cargo hauler paired with limousine quality was truly one of a kind. Developed under the ambitious project name “Galaxy”, the 850 was intended to lead the brand into a more dynamic future without abandoning traditional values such as safety and durability. It was the first time that Volvo paired a large vehicle with front-wheel drive with a transversely mounted five-cylinder engine. Boasting an unusual angular shape, the long-stretched Volvo indeed became a highly successful model on the roads of Europe. This may also have had to do with the fact that the estate car version had the same price tag as the limousine - which was unusual as well. But, the 850 was not the exclusive choice of rational car buyers. When they released the bright yellow T-5R, which WIKING is presenting in a miniaturised version, Volvo proved in 1994 that its station wagons, often belittled as “bricks”, could also be sporty when powered by a remarkable 241 hp. When they entered into the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) with a station wagon, the auto maker cemented the cult status of the model. WIKING has furnished the Volvo 850 with the typical contemporary paint of the “civilian” sports version.
