WIKING founder’s considered the Horch 850 to be more than just another classic to which he wanted to pay homage with a model making monument. It epitomised the automotive beauty of the thirties! The Horch 850 was a member of a family made of lavish top-tier vehicles manufactured by Horch, which was owned by Auto Union AG at the time. When launched in 1935, it was presented as the successor to the 500 B and produced at the Zwickau plant until 1940. In total, around 2,200 vehicles were built until the war put an end to production. The car was a paragon of elegance and technical sophistication in the 1930s and competed with such esteemed brands as Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, and Rolls-Royce. Technically, the Horch 850 impressed with a straight eight-cylinder engine wit 5.0-litre displacement, which initially delivered 100 hp and later up to 120 hp. The vehicle was equipped with a four-speed transmission with optional fast gear (overdrive), hydraulic drum brakes with power assistance, and a robust ladder frame chassis. The Horch 850 thus rolled off the production line as an honest-to-goodness passenger vehicle – which, sadly, remained unaffordable for most people. For WIKING founder Friedrich Peltzer, however, the Horch equally possessed the character of a classic and symbolic significance. Already in the1930s, he created a Horch miniature for the first series of car models on a scale of 1:200. In the seventies, the Horch 850 blazed a trail for the future series of 1:87-scale classics.
